  • EMPLOYMENT
  • NEW TEACHER INFO

Valid Passport

Korean Immigration Office only allows entry to those whose passport have a validity of six months of more. Please check your passport and secure a new one if you have less than a year left prior to arrival in Korea.

Visa

Your teaching visa (E-7) should be processed before your arrival. In case teacher(s) may enter earlier on a standard tourist visa issued upon arrival at the airport, your work visa will be processed after your arrival.

Tickets Purchase

There are couple of ways to purchase tickets for teachers. When the teacher(s) is coming from outside of Korea, such as U.S. or Canada, it is cheaper to purchase the tickets there. In this case, we can wire the money for the ticket purchase to a designated account so that the tickets can be purchased overseas. We also recommend that the teacher use his/her credit card for the ticket purchase and have the amount reimbursed when he/she arrives.

Important Visa Information

In case you are entering on a tourist visa, do not, on arrival at the Incheon International Airport (Seoul, Korea), disclose that you are coming to Korea to work at Global Christian School (GCS). This will only complicate future immigration procedures for your E-7 permit.

Vaccinations

No vaccinations are required. However, you may seek advice from your Doctor or clinic about possible precautionary vaccinations for common illnesses.

Housing

All accommodation is furnished with basic furnishings. Listed in the following are typical items that are provided: bed, chest, desk, chair, kitchen wear, washing machine, cooking range or stove, refrigerator, microwave oven, TV , etc.

What To Bring

Generally speaking, almost everything is available in Korea today, and is likely as cheap or cheaper to buy. Bring with you essential personal items. The voltage rating in Korea is usually 220 volts. Step-down voltage converters are widely available, however.

PRE-DEPARTURE CHECKLIST

Visa/ Passport

- Apply for a new passport if it expires within 1 year
- Purchase a round trip ticket (if purchasing a one-way ticket, make sure you have an outbound ticket for visa and entry purposes)

Medical Checks

Medical fees in Korea are much cheaper than that in U.S. You may fill your prescription in Korea for the following:
- Tuberculosis skin test
- Chest x-ray
- BCG vaccination if appropriate
- Hepatitis A/B injection one
- Hepatitis A/B injection two - one month later
- Typhoid
- Update Polio Measles/Mumps/Rubella/Diphtheria/
- Pertussis/Tetanus

Medical Care

There is a wide choice of medical and dental practitioners. Usually there will be a clinic in the vicinity of your accommodation and, in the event of a more serious illness, a hospital. GCS will provide all medical information you need.

Types of Public Transportation

You will soon notice that traffic congestion is part of everyday life in Korea. Distance is essentially measured in the time taken to travel from A to B. Traffic congestion tends to worsen during rush hours. The main types of public transportation in Seoul are the subway, taxis, and buses.

Cost of Living

It is difficult to estimate your weekly living costs for food, beverages etc., as the prices will vary from store to store and according to availability. Generally, items that are imported including meat, vegetables and wine, attract a large duty, especially if they are aimed at the expatriate community. Large items that are imported as components and then assembled here are less costly. Cash purchases will always attract a discount except in fixed price supermarkets and department style stores. Buying from the large local produce market, will often be cheaper than the general supermarket. Go along for yourself to experience the place, to see the variety of goods offered and to show the level of quality that you desire in your weekly shop. Meat from specialty delicatessens can be expensive. Supermarket quality is fine, providing you select wisely. Fish, seafood and chicken are kept refrigerated here, so they are safer to purchase at the supermarket rather than the open market. Most supermarkets carry a very good range. Remember that you may not find your exact brand but you will find a close substitute.
